HIRC statement on Supreme Court decision on deportations

The Harvard Immigration and Refugee Clinical Program (HIRC) is deeply disappointed by today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision on Department of Homeland Security v. Thuraissigiam, which will fast-track deportations of certain asylum-seekers. HIRC had previously submitted an amicus brief in this case. We echo the words of ACLU attorney Lee Geherent, who argued the case before the Court, who stated: “This decision means that some people facing flawed deportation orders can be forcibly removed with no judicial oversight, putting their lives in grave danger.” Despite today’s disheartening decision, HIRC remains committed to advocating for the rights of asylum-seekers who come to the U.S. seeking safety and protection.
