HIP Spring Symposium

March 31st – April 2nd

Please join the HLS Immigration Project (“HIP”) for a three-day symposium on “Amplifying Immigrant Voices: Intersections with Race, Gender, and Ability.” Each event will take place at 7 PM EST. A $25 GrubHub credit will be available for each day of the symposium for any law students who attend!

DAY ONE – IMMIGRATION & RACE

Join HIP and our panelists, Abena Abraham from Black Immigrant Collectives, Nora Picasso Uvalle from TX Rio Grande Legal Aid, and Abraham Paulos from the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, in discussing how prevailing narratives and structural racism affect Black migrants, highlighted through the recent influx in Haitian migrants, and ways to leverage the law and community power to combat it.

DAY TWO – IMMIGRATION & GENDER

Our second event is a screening of Lingua Franca, directed by Isabel Sandoval. The film follows Olivia, an undocumented trans woman, as she works as a live-in caregiver for an elderly woman in Brooklyn. While the stress of her status follows her, she soon falls in love with her charge’s grandson and the film explores their romance.

Join our panelists Katherine Perez from the Coelho Center for Disability Law, Policy, and Innovation, Roxanna Moussavian from Pangea Legal Services, and Michelle Garcia from Cambiando Vidas, in discussing the intersections between disability and immigration, using the recent public charge rule as a guide, and how lawyers and community organizers are advocating for improvements.

Lunch Talk with Chesa Boudin

April 2nd, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EST

Join the Crimmigration Clinic for a virtual lunch talk featuring San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin. The event will consist of a discussion between DA Boudin and Crimmigration Clinic Director Phil Torrey, followed by a Q & A session. Register at https://tinyurl.com/hlscrimm-chesaboudin

San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin was elected in November 2019 on a progressive platform centered on ending mass incarceration; protecting crime survivors; and addressing the root causes of crime. Boudin campaigned for the office on a decarceration platform of eliminating cash bail, establishing a unit to re-evaluate wrongful convictions and refusing to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with raids and arrests. DA Boudin was a Rhodes Scholar and graduated from Yale Law School. He worked as a law clerk to the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and later for the Honorable Charles Breyer on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. DA Boudin then worked as a public defender in San Francisco, where he helped lead the office’s bail reform unit.
