HIRCP signs on to letter regarding Title 42 expulsion policy

Our Program recently joined Human Rights First and over 100 other organizations from across the country in submitting a letter to President Biden regarding his administration’s reported plans to continue to use the Title 42 expulsion policy. Under this policy, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has banned individuals from entering the United States based on “the introduction of [a communicable] disease into the United States.” Since Title 42 was enacted on March 20, 2020, thousands and thousands of asylum seekers have been turned away from the border, and this policy has disproportionately impacted Black asylum seekers from African and Caribbean countries, as well as LGBTQ refugees.

With the 70th anniversary of the Refugee Convention approaching on July 28th, we call on President Biden to take action immediately to end this harmful, illegal policy and protect the rights of those seeking safety and protection in the United States.
