Call for Submissions: Volume 64 Special Online Issue
The Harvard International Law Journal invites submissions on international law and standards impacting refugees and migration, with a focus on those excluded from existing pathways to protection. Submissions will be published in Volume 64’s Special Issue of our Online Journal. The deadline for submissions is December 15, 2022.
Over 100 million people – an unprecedented number – have fled their homes due to a range of causes, including climate change, human rights violations, persecution, and conflict. The number of those affected continues to rise as we see persistent emergence of such issues across the globe. With uneven compliance with international legal protections, significant variance in domestic laws, and millions left unprotected, a myriad of questions surrounding legal status and protection arise.
Our Special Issue calls for materials addressing these issues, particularly emerging and unexplored controversies, including, but not limited to:
- Uneven compliance with international legal protections, including the fundamental non-refoulement obligation, and exclusions from existing legal pathways.
- Gaps in protection for those fleeing climate disaster, political conflict, war, and poverty.
- Definitional questions, including expansion and backtracking, surrounding protections for women, children, and other vulnerable groups.
- Key differences and intersections between distinct domestic regimes, including those that address people displaced by climate change and internally displaced people; and
- Discussions of traditionally unprotected groups and evolving understandings of the role of non-state actor persecution.
We welcome a range of diverse materials, and encourage all – scholars, practitioners, students, artists, creative writers, activists, or simply interested parties – to contribute materials. We ask that written submissions to be kept to up to 3,000 words. We also welcome visual art and other creative submissions.
Submissions Process:
Submissions to ILJ Online will be reviewed on a rolling basis by HILJ’s Online Staff, which is comprised of J.D. and LL.M. candidates, and they may also be reviewed by our faculty advisors and/or scholars in our peer network. Once a piece has been selected, the Lead Online Executive Editor will contact the author with further information on the editing and publication process.
