Statement on the crisis in Ukraine

On behalf of our entire Program, we express our grave concern over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We are heartbroken by the continued acts of violence against the Ukrainian people and our thoughts are with all those who have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety. We are also disturbed by accounts of discrimination against African, South Asian, and Middle Eastern immigrants at neighboring borders and we strongly denounce these acts of racism.

During this time of crisis, the United States must honor its duties under the Refugee Convention and welcome those seeking safety and protection. We call on the Biden administration to grant Temporary Protected Status for Ukrainians currently in the United States and to welcome and expedite any cases of Ukrainian nationals who are eligible to come to the U.S.

We know there are many people who are in need of legal assistance at this time. If you are a Harvard student, staff, or faculty member who has concerns about how these recent events may affect your immigration status, please reach out to our Harvard Representation Initiative (HRI) team. HRI offers free legal and social work services to Harvard affiliates. To schedule an appointment, call 617-495-6648 or email hri@law.harvard.edu. If you are not a member of the Harvard community, we encourage you to contact one of the organizations or private attorneys listed on our website

For those who are looking to offer their support to Ukrainians, we have compiled a growing list of organizations that are supporting those in need in Ukraine:
